Thinkspace Projects is pleased to present Yosuke Ueno’s Beautiful Noise, inspired by the reborn aesthetic of the Japanese art of “kintsugi,” which refers to repairing broken pottery by mending the breaks with powdered gold. Rather than dispose of or hide the breakage, it highlights the process of repair as beautiful. Ueno explores the Japanese tradition of admiring beauty in the incompleteness of objects, acknowledging breakage, damage, and noise as proof of existence.
Ueno explains, “This time, in all the artworks, I made noise by running brushes. This noise plays a role of punctuation marks and gives artworks a surge of energy which comes out to be a perfect harmony.” The artist goes on to say, “At this point, I am sensing that I’ve come to a place where my artwork has reached out to supreme expression. It’s been thirty years since I had my first solo show at the age of sixteen. What I seek is not to paint beautifully, but to make artwork which can touch a sense of ‘existing.’ I have always tried to change my painting styles, and this show is no exception.”
