Summer is around the corner, and one of the events that is becoming a marker of this is CAN, aka Contemporary Art Now art fair in Ibizia, which is about to open its doors for the third time! From June 26th until June 30th (slightly earlier than previous years), the convention center FECOEV, just outside of Ibiza town, will be hosting the main event of the growing Ibiza Art Week, presenting a selection of 30+ galleries from around the globe that are blending the love for art with Mediterranean summer vibes.
Launched in 2022, the CAN art fair was part of an effort to bring the creative and artistic spirit back to the island, whose reputation was founded by the avant-garde European artists who were forced to run away from authoritarian regimes around the 1930s. A few decades later, during the ’60s and ’70s, many Americans who wanted to escape the Vietnam War madness found their home on the remote island, too, and such an environment set the foundation for the island’s well-recognized spirit. This spirit is now getting further nurtured by the international art fair, as well as many other side events that will take place during the Ibizia Art Week. “The island is an inexhaustible source of artistic inspiration, and our idea is to mix culture, business, and enjoyment. Many people in the art world seem to have some kind of connection to the island. What differentiates CAN Ibiza is the work of our guest curator, who identifies and invites a selection of the galleries due to their position at the forefront of the emerging international art scene,” says the fair director and founder, Sergio Sancho.
With their 3rd edition, the art fair that is curated by Saša Bogojev and organized by the team behind the UVNT art fair in Madrid brings a selection of galleries from Australia and over Europe to the USA and Canada. These galleries will be presenting the most recent works by their artists, many of which were featured in Juxtapoz magazine in the past. As some of the highlights, we can mark Sara Birns’ solo presentation with Cassina Projects, Cristina Lama’s solo presentation with VETA by Fer Francés, or the solo presentation by the well-renowned Spanish artist José María Yturralde with Ruttkowski; 68. We’re also looking forward to the presentations by some CAN first-timers, such as Ross-Sutton Gallery, GALERIA CONTINUA, Madragoa, Gathering, AKIINOUE, Xippas, or Duran | Mashaal, as well as the CAN “veterans” such as L21, Galerie Droste, Lundgren, Plan X, etc. Besides the fair, CAN will include a series of OFF site exhibitions presenting works by artists from Balearic islands, while the island visitors and locals are invited to visit other openings, pop-up exhibitions, and events taking place during the week, including a solo exhibition by Mai Blanco at the island’s cultural landmark, Fundacion La Nave Salinas.
