The isolation of the pandemic gave Sage Sohier time to revisit her archive of negatives and contact sheets, where she discovered a number of interesting images that were never printed. Passing Time is a series of photographs, spanning from 1979 to 1985, a pre-digital, largely un-air-conditioned era, when people fled the heat of their houses to hang out in their yards and on the street.

Time moved more slowly; restlessness led to spontaneous play. Sohier noticed a kind of relaxed sensuality in many of the pictures, ultimately collating a testament to the value of idle time for community gatherings, childhood imagination, solitude, and photography itself.

Passing Time is on view at Blue Sky Gallery in Portland and also available as a monograph from Nazraeli Press.
