Barry McGee and the “OLDE IFFY” Feeling Goes to Tokyo

Must read

Isetan the Space, Tokyo // February 03, 2024 – March 16, 2024

The thing about Barry McGee is that through all his career in graffiti and maintaing a sense of street-centric amalgamy in his fine art works and presentations, he looks quite good in a white cube. The edges can be rougher, the chaos more noticeable, the energy more palpable. For his newest presentation, OLDE IFFY, on view now at Isetan the Space in Tokyo in parntership with Perrotin, McGee has his signature patters, faces, oblong shaped sculptures are carefully angled, the color-blocking immaculate and the patterns hypnotizing clear in their own space. If there was ever an artist who can show you his inner psyche in the minimalist of places, it’s McGee, and the legend known as TWIST is always refreshingly relevant. —Evan Pricco
